Abel Iloco, Pride of every Ilocano

Abel Iloco is one of the most prestigious treasures and a pride of every Ilocano. In the first week of May, we celebrate Binatbatan Festival to keep and continuously preserve the weaving culture mainly in the heart if Ilocos Sur, Vigan City. The word binatbatan came from the word batbat in Ilocano which is taken from the first step in making abel wherein the kapas or cotton balls from the tree were removed from the seed using bamboo sticks. Also, batbat also has an important role to folk dance, because a Philippine Folk dance was created that was inspired by it and made it as the main feature of the festival. That is the short history or origin of Binatbatan Festival, and the main purpose of it is to show and promote our weaving culture mainly Abel Iloco and also it gives respect to biguenos and tourists.

Going back when everything was normal, me and my friends always tend to participate to the festival even though I am quite far from vigan. There are many events and activities during the festival. For me, one of the main highlights and one of the most interesting is the Binatbatan Street Dancing, it hits me differently, since ever dancer and loud instruments shows emotion, they show how joyful they are to be a bigueno and have a great treasure like Abel Iloco. The dancers give efforts to their costume, it is mainly made out of Abel and their props depends on their likes. The best thing that dancers have is their smile, they smile even though it is tiring and hot, you can see how they give so much efforts just to make people smile and give and unforgettable experience while you join in the celebration of Binatbatan Festival. There are also contests provided by the city government such as the On the spot photography contest, Larong Lahi, Carabao Painting and so much more. Also one of the most entertaining part is Vigan City invites Pinoy celebrities to give happiness and entertain people here in our whole province.

During this pandemic we all know that the number of cases is already decreasing, and somewhat somehow we can now celebrate festivals. Celebrating Binatbatan Festival is not forbidden, but as long as health protocols were implemented and followed, everyone can keep their selves away from getting infected. Binatbatan Festival’s events just add on the essence of it, but the main means of this festival lives in our hearts, it is being proud of ourselves as a Bigueno and as one of the people to have one of the world class master pieces’.
